In Hanafi fiqh most scholars use the silver nisab (the lower threshold) as the standard.

How Is Zakat Calculated?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. Every Muslim whose zakatable wealth reaches the nisab threshold and completes one lunar (Hijri) year must pay2.5% (one-fortieth) of their total wealth as zakat.

Nisab thresholds (Hanafi fiqh)

NisabAmountValue today (PKR)
Gold7.5 tola (87.48 g)Rs. 3,299,520
Silver52.5 tola (612.36 g)Rs. 342,930

Because the silver nisab is far lower in value than the gold nisab, most Pakistani scholars use the silver nisab as the standard — if your total wealth (cash, bank balance, gold, silver and business assets combined, minus debts) reaches the silver nisab, zakat becomes obligatory. The calculator above shows both standards so you can follow your scholar's position.

What counts as zakatable wealth?

  • Cash in hand and bank balances
  • Gold and silver (including jewelry), at current market value
  • Trade goods and business inventory held for sale
  • Receivables where repayment is expected

Subtract your outstanding debts from the total — zakat is 2.5% of the remainder.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth that makes zakat obligatory. In Hanafi fiqh the gold nisab is 7.5 tola (87.48 g) and the silver nisab is 52.5 tola (612.36 g). Because the silver nisab is far lower in value, most scholars use it as the standard.

How much zakat is due on gold?

If your total zakatable wealth (gold, silver, cash, bank balance and business assets combined, minus debts) reaches nisab and a lunar year passes over it, 2.5% (one-fortieth) of the total is due as zakat.

Is there zakat on bank balance?

Yes. Money in the bank counts as cash. Include it in your total wealth — if the combined total reaches nisab, 2.5% zakat is due on it as well.

What is the ruling on zakat for loans?

Money you have lent to others, where repayment is expected, counts toward your zakatable wealth. Debts you owe are subtracted from the total.

Who pays zakat on a wife's jewelry?

According to Hanafi fiqh, zakat on a woman’s jewelry is due from the woman herself, provided the wealth in her ownership reaches nisab.

How do I calculate zakat on business stock?

Value trade inventory at its current market price (not purchase price) and pay 2.5% on it. Revalue the stock each year on your zakat date.
